2027 is a very special year to walk the Camino de Santiago: it is a Holy Year (Año Xacobeo). The feast of St James falls on Sunday, July 25, 2027, which by tradition makes 2027 a Compostela Holy Year. If you are thinking about walking in 2027, here is everything you need to plan it well — and early.

What is the Camino Holy Year?

A Compostela Holy Year happens when July 25 falls on a Sunday — 2027 is the first since 2021. In a Holy Year:

  • The Holy Door (Porta Santa) of Santiago Cathedral is opened and stays open all year: entering through it grants a plenary indulgence for pilgrims who also attend mass, receive communion, and pray for the Pope's intentions.
  • The Compostela (pilgrim certificate) is issued exactly the same as always: walk the last 100 km (or cycle 200 km) and collect two stamps per day on the final stretch.
  • Pilgrim numbers surge. Ordinary years now welcome 400,000+ pilgrims; a Holy Year can push that well past half a million, concentrated on the classic routes.

When to walk in 2027

The busiest stretch of a Holy Year is May through September, especially the last 100 km from Sarria. If you have flexibility:

  • Best value months: April–May and late September–October 2027 — same trails, a fraction of the crowds.
  • Peak: June 15 – September 15. Beautiful, but expect full dormitories and queues.
  • Quietest: January–March and November–December 2027 — cold on the meseta and in Galicia, but nearly empty trails and open Holy Door.

Which route to choose in a Holy Year

  • Camino Francés — the classic, and the busiest in a Holy Year. Walk it in spring or autumn if you prefer space. See the Camino Francés route guide.
  • Camino Portugués — a great Holy Year alternative, with the coastal variant even quieter.
  • Camino Primitivo — the Original Way through Asturias; demanding, far less crowded. Route guide.
  • Camino Invierno or Vía de la Plata — the solitude routes, ideal if you want a Holy Year credential without Holy Year crowds.
  • Camino del Norte — stunning and longer, so it disperses walkers well until Galicia.

How to prepare (start now)

  2. Build your itinerary — use the free Camino planner to get day-by-day stages with elevation and terrain.
  3. Book accommodation early — in a Holy Year, private albergues along the last 100 km fill weeks ahead. Read our 2027 booking timeline for a month-by-month plan.
  4. Get your credential — order the pilgrim credencial in advance; see our credential and stamps guide.
  5. Arrange baggage transfer — services book up fastest in a Holy Year; reserve ahead on the baggage transport page.

FAQ

When is the next Camino Holy Year after 2027?

After 2027, the following Compostela Holy Years are 2032 and 2033 — they occur whenever July 25 falls on a Sunday, roughly every 5–6 years.

Is the Compostela different in a Holy Year?

No. The certificate requirements are identical in Holy Years: the last 100 km on foot (or 200 km by bike) with the required stamps. The Holy Door and the indulgence are the extras.

Will it be too crowded in 2027?

The classic routes from May to September will be busy, similar to summer 2021–2023 but heavier. Choose shoulder-season dates, a quieter route, or book accommodation well ahead and the crowds stay manageable.
