In a normal year, you can walk most of the Camino and find a bed wherever you stop. 2027 is not a normal year — it is a Compostela Holy Year, and pilgrim numbers will surge. Here is a realistic, month-by-month timeline for booking your 2027 Camino, from accommodation to baggage transfer.

The one rule for 2027
In a Holy Year, demand concentrates on the classic routes from May to September — above all the last 100 km from Sarria. Private albergues there routinely sell out weeks in advance. Municipal albergues cannot be reserved anywhere on the Camino: they are first-come, first-served, so in peak season plan to arrive by early afternoon.
Month-by-month booking timeline
October–December 2026 (now)
- Choose your route and dates using the route portal and lock in your holidays.
- Request vacation time and book long-haul flights as soon as airlines release 2027 fares (about 11 months ahead).
- Order your pilgrim credential (see the credential guide).
- The Holy Door of Santiago opens at the end of December 2026 — if you want the Holy Year experience with thinner crowds, consider walking in winter or early spring.
January–March 2027
- Booking season opens. Reserve accommodation for May–September stages as soon as listings go live — this is when the best private albergues get taken.
- Reserve baggage transfer for your walking window; Holy Year slots go early on the baggage transport page.
- If you walk the Francés, book Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port and the first nights in Navarre now.
April–May 2027
- Walking season begins. If you are walking in summer, every remaining May–September night should be booked before the end of May.
- Book any remaining accommodation for August if you have not — August 2027 will be the single busiest month of the whole Holy Year.
June–August 2027 (peak)
- Everything on the last 100 km is booked out; if you are walking without reservations, aim to arrive at your daily destination before 1–2 pm.
- Consider the quieter routes: the Camino Primitivo, Camino Invierno or Vía de la Plata keep a sense of space even in a Holy Year.
September–December 2027
- Crowds drop fast after mid-September. Autumn is the sweetest Holy Year walking — and from late October you can often book a bed the same day.
What to book, in order of urgency
- Flights and trains — the moment 2027 schedules open.
- Private albergues and guesthouses on the last 100 km — weeks to months ahead.
- Baggage transfer — reserve at least a month before you walk in Holy Year peak.
- First-night accommodation in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, Porto, Oviedo or Ferrol — start towns are small and fill first.
- Everything else — one to two weeks ahead is fine outside the peak months.
FAQ
Can I walk the 2027 Holy Year Camino without booking anything?
Outside June–August and outside the last 100 km, mostly yes. In the Holy Year peak, no — private albergues sell out and municipal beds fill by early afternoon. Book the busy stretch even if you plan to improvise elsewhere.
When should I book albergues for summer 2027?
Book May–September 2027 accommodation between January and March 2027, when 2027 listings open. For August on the Francés or the last 100 km, earlier is better.
Do I need to book baggage transfer in advance?
Yes, in Holy Year peak. Providers run fixed daily routes and their capacity is limited — reserve your dates as soon as your itinerary is set on the baggage transport page.
